The UP Mathematics Club is a non-stock, non-profit university-wide organization. It is dedicated to promoting and sustaining the interest in mathematics of college and university students through wholesome and friendly activities.
The U.P. Mathematics Club was but a dream in a time when even our country’s independence was just a vision. Yet, in 1921, that dream became a reality in a 13 year old university. This organization committed to promoting an underdeveloped subject still holds the same ideals as its founders had almost 87 years ago.
Lofty ideals such as the promotion of mathematics in its various fields, service to the studentry and helping in the intellectual development and social growth of its members still holding great meaning to the members of the organization. Under the leadership of the Board of Directors, which is composed of the organization’s elected officers, the different committees work towards the realization of these ideals. The Academic Affairs Committee as the name implies, takes care of the academic concerns of the club like tutorials and math reviews. The Public Relations Committee concerns itself with promoting the organization, its projects, and other going on. The Ways and Means Committee serves as the organization’s main workforce. Aside from these standing committees, the organization also has two special committees, namely the Financial Committee and the Membership Committee. The former is burdened with financing the different club activities while the latter evaluates the membership status of the club members.
Perhaps the manifestation of the organization’s zeal in pursuing these grand ideals is when it holds its two great traditions: the Annual Inter-university Math Quiz and the Freshman Inter-block Math Quiz.
Through the years, the club has tried to do its share to contribute to upgrading the level of Mathematics in the country. In the years that will follow the U.P. Math Club aspires to do even more.
